Historic District Poolhaus

A German family relocating to Athens wanted a comfortable place for out-of-town family and friends to stay for extended visits. The poolhaus needed to serve as both guest cottage and pool-side oasis for the family.

The existing craftsman house is located in a historic district. The poolhaus addition was thoughtfully designed to tie to the existing historic home through the use of cedar shake siding and exposed rafter tails, yet it also demonstrates an honesty about the period of its construction through features such as the 3-panel, bi-folding, aluminum-clad patio doors. The small cottage was given a spacious feel through a vaulted ceiling and the bifold patio doors effectively make the sitting room an extension of the pool-side patio. A carefully sited south-facing standing seam metal roof was designed to house a future solar array which would offset the energy required for pool heating.
