Arcollab was tasked by our client to design a European-inspired farmhouse. Living in Germany influenced their desire for simple gable forms with clean lines that they grew accustomed to seeing in the German landscape.
The exterior façade is finished with smooth, white stucco and minimal roof overhangs which emphasize the simple gable form. Natural wood tones are used to warm the façade and strengthen the entry sequence. Modern front and rear porches facilitate outdoor living and a strong connection to the outdoors. Collection of rainwater from the roofs will reduce water use for garden and landscape irrigation.
The location of the home on the large wooded site was deliberate. The goal was to nestle the garage into the hillside so that it would not be visible when approaching the home. The driveway’s entry sequence allows the arrival experience to be shaped by the beautiful wooded landscape and to then encounter the home within that context. The orientation, like all Arcollab designs, takes advantage of solar opportunities for photovoltaics, passive solar strategies, and the windows carefully frame views of the landscape.
