Autumnwood Residence

This project is a study in incorporating responsible solar orientation overlaid into a pre-developed neighborhood.

The surrounding homes have a strong presence parallel with the street. Unfortunately, this orientation is about 45 degrees off of the ideal north/south solar orientation. The proposed solution orients portions of the house parallel to the street, respecting the neighborhood design, while the main living area orients on the north/south axis to provide ample windows for daylighting and passive heating/cooling. The south-facing roofline also allows for a PV solar array along the backside of the house. The resultant intersection of the two axes makes for a dynamic design in the interior of the home. The multiple angles are highlighted on the exterior through changes in material from lapped siding to cedar rainscreen along the west elevation.

Rolling custom bookcases provide flexibility in interior use by allowing for an intimate reading and music room or a large space for entertaining.
