The homeowners wished to add a modern addition to their early 20th century craftsman bungalow. The house was increased from 1,573 to 2,635 heated square feet by renovating the kitchen and mudroom and adding a new living room, master suite, and guest suite as well as outdoor living space.
The exterior design juxtaposes a modern metal-clad 2nd story volume against the existing craftsman home. The house was re-sided primarily in fiber cement lapped siding to tie old and new together. The dark fiber cement walls are carved out on the rear of the addition to reveal natural cedar cladding. The resultant overhang protects both the windows/patio doors and the natural siding from the elements.
The goal of the interior layout was to create an open light-filled space for living and sleeping with a strong tie to the outdoors. The modern interior detailing of the addition highlights the honesty of its period of construction as well as that of the original structure.
